Pedagogy | Building Great Teaching Over Time

Access Without Lowering the Ceiling

Core leadership question:

How do leaders create the systems, language and habits that help teaching improve across the school?

Session three summary:

Improving teaching is one of the most important responsibilities of school leadership, but professional development does not always lead to changes in classroom practice. One-off training, isolated strategies and crowded CPD calendars rarely build the depth of expertise schools need.

This session explores how leaders can build teacher expertise deliberately over time. Drawing on the language and structure of great teaching, it will consider how schools can create a more coherent approach to professional learning, including shared priorities, focused development cycles, meaningful collaboration, rehearsal, feedback and reflection. The session will also explore how leaders can know whether professional learning is changing practice, before waiting for outcomes data to tell the whole story.

Delegates will leave with practical prompts for reviewing their current approach to professional development and identifying how to build a stronger professional learning culture rooted in classroom practice.
